# Atlantic overturning circulation tipping point

- kind: problem
- status: open
- year: 1961

**Statement.** Will the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation collapse this century, and at what warming?

Its collapse would cool northwest Europe sharply and shift tropical rainfall. Direct measurements only began in 2004, and proxy-based early-warning analyses disagree about how close it is to a threshold.
