# Imaging a black hole

- kind: problem
- status: solved (evidence tier V3)
- year: 1973

**Statement.** Can the shadow of a black hole's event horizon be seen?

A planet-sized array of radio telescopes, synchronized by atomic clocks, resolved the ring of light around M87's black hole. The shadow's size matched general relativity's prediction.

*Evidence tier V3 is the import default for a result the curation records as settled in the published record. No formal proof or certificate is attached to this page yet.*

Closed 2019, Event Horizon Telescope (M87*); 2022, Sagittarius A*.
