# Is language localized in the brain?

- kind: problem
- status: solved (evidence tier V3)
- year: 1825

**Statement.** Is the capacity for language tied to particular regions of the brain?

Broca's patient 'Tan' could understand speech but say only one syllable. His autopsy showed damage to the left frontal lobe, which gave the first strong evidence for localized brain function. Modern imaging shows language relies on distributed networks around these areas.

*Evidence tier V3 is the import default for a result the curation records as settled in the published record. No formal proof or certificate is attached to this page yet.*

Closed 1861, Paul Broca; 1874, Carl Wernicke.
