# Carbon removal at gigaton scale

- kind: problem
- status: open
- year: 1999

**Statement.** Can CO2 be removed from the atmosphere permanently at billions of tonnes per year and under $100 a tonne?

Most climate scenarios that meet the Paris targets assume large removals by mid-century. Direct air capture works today at thousands of tonnes a year and several hundred dollars a tonne. Enhanced weathering and other methods are cheaper but harder to measure, so verification is a large part of the problem.
