# Complete brain wiring diagrams

- kind: problem
- status: partial
- year: 1972

**Statement.** Can the complete synaptic wiring of a brain be mapped, and does it explain behavior?

The fly connectome was mapped with a mix of machine segmentation and crowd proofreading. A mouse brain is about 500 times larger. Whether wiring alone predicts behavior is itself an open question: C. elegans has been mapped for decades and is not yet fully understood.

Closed 1986, C. elegans (302 neurons); 2024, the adult fruit fly brain (about 140,000 neurons), FlyWire.
