Why some nations grow rich
Candidate explanations include institutions, geography, culture, coal and colonial extraction. Acemoglu, Johnson and Robinson won the 2024 economics Nobel for evidence on institutions from natural experiments. East Asia's catch-up shows convergence is possible, and nobody knows a recipe that reliably reproduces it.
