# The Higgs boson

- kind: problem
- status: solved (evidence tier V3)
- year: 1964
- authors: Englert and Brout; Higgs; Guralnik, Hagen and Kibble

**Statement.** Does the field that gives elementary particles their mass exist?

Found 48 years after it was predicted, at 125 GeV, by two independent detectors. Its measured mass leaves the vacuum near the edge of stability, which is itself a puzzle. The discovery completed the Standard Model's particle list; everything beyond it is now open territory.

*Evidence tier V3 is the import default for a result the curation records as settled in the published record. No formal proof or certificate is attached to this page yet.*

Posed 1964, Englert and Brout; Higgs; Guralnik, Hagen and Kibble. Closed 2012, ATLAS and CMS at the Large Hadron Collider.
