**Statement.** Is the nervous system a continuous network, or made of separate cells?

Golgi, whose stain made the question answerable, believed in a continuous net. Cajal used the same stain to argue for discrete neurons connected at gaps. They shared the 1906 Nobel Prize while still disagreeing, and electron microscopes later showed the synaptic gap.

*Evidence tier V3 is the import default for a result the curation records as settled in the published record. No formal proof or certificate is attached to this page yet.*

Closed 1888, Santiago Ramón y Cajal; confirmed by electron microscopy in the 1950s.
