# What causes stomach ulcers

- kind: problem
- status: solved (evidence tier V3)
- year: 1910

**Statement.** Are peptic ulcers caused by stress and acid, or by an infection?

The consensus that no bacteria could survive stomach acid was wrong. Marshall drank a culture of H. pylori to prove it caused gastritis. Ulcers became curable with antibiotics, and the pair won the 2005 Nobel Prize.

*Evidence tier V3 is the import default for a result the curation records as settled in the published record. No formal proof or certificate is attached to this page yet.*

Closed 1982, Barry Marshall and Robin Warren identify Helicobacter pylori.
