# Can machines think? (the imitation game)

**Statement.** Can a machine converse indistinguishably from a human?

Turing proposed conversation as a test to replace an ill-defined question. By the mid-2020s language models were judged human in controlled imitation-game studies at or above chance. Few think this settles what Turing's original question was about, which is why it is marked partial.
