# The Voynich manuscript

- kind: problem
- status: open
- year: 1912

**Statement.** What, if anything, does the 15th-century Voynich manuscript say?

Radiocarbon dating puts the vellum in the early 1400s. Its text has statistical regularities like natural language, yet every proposed decipherment has failed to predict anything. It may be a cipher, a lost language, or an elaborate hoax.
